the superbowl annoyed the living fuck out of me.

not the sloppy game, not the impenetrable southern accent of phill sims, not even my inane friends screaming "IT'S OVER, IT'S OVER" every time there was a turnover...

(and you can imagine how annoying that got)

no, friends, what pissed me off the most was tony dungy's lombardi trophy acceptance speech. i think i audibly winced every time tony mentioned god or white jeebus in his speech, and for (i think) good reason.

both dungy and lovey put in a lot of personal time and effort to get where they were this evening. they did it without the support of the existing establishment they were a part of and did it without any precedence to look towards. what they achieved this season was not an issue of any kind of divine intervention or sustenance, but a matter of simple individual will.

now, granted, their faith may have had quite a bit to do with the establishment of that kind of personal constitution within those two men, but at the end of the day, some white god did not look down from the heavens and say "this year is tony's year. i'll figure out next year when we get to it, ok?"

i winced because instead of thanking the flesh and blood people who were around him through this year (and all his years in the system), or thanking his wife and kids who have been with him through all this, or making any mention of his tragically departed son (whose memory i'm sure was with him this whole season) he's thankful to a god who, if its existence can be believed, most certainly has better things to be concerned with than the culmination of the largest commercial self-genuflection devised by human kind.

but maybe that's just my take on it.

tchau,
bear.

Dungy's been doing public appearances for the Indiana Family Institute, apparently with the official approval of the Colts.

Knowing this made hearing that bit of his speech all the more painful - I know that all his god-talk comes from hardcore batshit Christianity rather than the somewhat less scary tendency in our culture to thank god for all kinds of things totally not god-related.
